Cross-Country Flying requires planning and it is highly recommended that a flight plan be filed. I received my private pilot’s License in 1972 and shortly after I planned a flight from Long Beach, CA to Seattle, WA. I got up very early that morning and drove to the airport only to find the airport fogged in. It was almost noon when the fog cleared and I proceeded to file my flight plan and get under way. I just passed over the airport at Coalinga, CA, when my radio started to fade and I realized the electrical system was not functioning. A U turn back to Coalinga and landing was in order. They charged the battery and checked out the electrical system and, after two hours, I topped off the fuel tanks. I amended my flight plan for a refueling stop at Medford, Or, in place of Redding, CA and a destination of Portland, OR. I was ready to resume the flight. Arriving in Medford, I found the fueling station closed for the night but a note on the gate said if I called they would come and fuel my airplane. After getting something to eat and another two hours the plane was refueled and I was ready to start my last leg of the flight. Sometime after taking off from Medford, I fell asleep. I don’t know for how long but it was long enough to use fuel from the right wing fuel tank and cause the plane to bank and turn to the left and loose altitude. I think it was a change in engine noise that woke me up. I level, ed the wings and climbed to a higher altitude. I was well off course and used the VOR to find my location and set a new course to Portland, landing there after 3 AM. I have made numerous flights from San Diego to Portland, Seattle and Spokane and many places in between without incident, but I learned to never ever challenge myself or mother nature. There is always tomorrow.
Safety is first and foremost when flying, don’t just learn safety but live it. Practice emergency procedures until they are second nature for you.
Interactive study programs are fun and effective. Dedicate yourself to the training program and you will pass the written test in days not months or years, as it is with old fashion training techniques. Many give up and never pass the test with these out dated programs.
Be well prepared for your flight training. You will receive your Private Pilot’s License in a short period of time.
I wish you the best of luck in your flight training endeavor.
